The Workshop of the IPA INNOAXIS Poject - Meeting Summary
The workshop of the Hungarian–Serbian project called “INNOAXIS - The borderline as an axis of innovation” was organised by the Centre for Regional Studies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA RKK) and the Regional Scientific Association (RTT) with the contribution of the Local Government of Mórahalom. The primal aim of the professional forum was to summarise the so far accomplished work of the INNOAXIS project, to discuss the strategic background materials of the eight sectors defined in the project and to create a basis for the operative programs regarding the INNOAXIS territory.

One of the most important professional meetings of the project, the workshop was held on 10th May 2011 at Mórahalom. There were nearly 50 participants at the meeting, which – taking in consideration the size of the project – is a relatively high number. The participants of the workshop were greeted by Zoltán Nógrádi, the mayor of Mórahalom in the morning session. The so far accomplished work phases of the project and the results of the sectoral work groups were presented by Dr. Éva Perger, the director of the Great Plain Research Institute of Centre for Regional Studies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA RKK), and András Ritz, the president of the Regional Scientific Association (RTT). In their presentation they gave an overall view on and summarised the strategic materials of the sectors that were to be discussed at this workshop.

After the short working lunch the sectoral discussions were held.
The leaders of the sectoral discussions:
Prof. Irén Gábrity Molnár – education
Prof. György Sefcsich – transportation
Zsófia Veréb Miskolczi - Dr. Jenő Zsolt Farkas – economy
András Ricz – social integrity
Dr. Bálint Csatári – culture
Ági Pap – tourism
Dr. András Donát Kovács – environment

The participants of the workshop discussed the environmental-social-economic processes and conflicts of the INNOAXIS territory in small thematic-sectoral groups and tried to find out the possible solutions and answer the most important professional questions. The discussion groups, consisting of 10-15 persons, mainly focused on the short-, middle- and long term possibilities, but several horizontal developmental possibilities emerged as well. On the one hand the participants of nearly all the sectors agreed that there are numerous unutilised possibilities in the territory, on the other hand they also highlighted that there are macro environmental causes for the territory’s lagging behind. The new developmental possibilities of the border regions were emphasized by the participants. The alternative solutions for the sustainability of the peripheral territories (especially in the field of agriculture, environmental management and tourism) were also talked over.
The discussion sessions of the workshop were followed by a final section in which the leaders of the sectors summarised the most important statements according to which all the participants agreed that regardless of the unpredictability of political paradigms such a multifunctional region has to be created which would ensure the growth of the local society’s living standard, the environmental sustainability and the economic catch-up of the settlements. Thus the Serbian-Hungarian border will have a rather specific and important role in the future. The workshop had a professional atmosphere and according to the feedback of the participants it was successful.
